Mini-Review & Giveaway : Some Fine Day by Kat Ross

Summary (from Goodreads)

Title : Some Fine Day
Author : Kat Ross

Publication Date : February 17th 2015
Publisher : Skyscape
Goodreads - Amazon - Barnes & Noble

A generation ago, continent-sized storms called hypercanes caused the Earth to flood. The survivors were forced to retreat deep underground and build a new society.

This is the story that sixteen-year-old Jansin Nordqvist has heard all of her life.

Jansin grew up in a civilization far below the Earth’s surface. She’s spent the last eight years in military intelligence training. So when her parents surprise her with a coveted yet treacherous trip above ground, she’s prepared for anything. She’s especially thrilled to feel the fresh air, see the sun, and view the wide-open skies and the ocean for herself.

But when raiders attack Jansin’s camp and take her prisoner, she is forced to question everything she’s been taught. What do her captors want? How will she get back underground? And if she ever does, will she want to stay after learning the truth?

Personal Thoughts

I read Some Fine Day as an ARC when it was about to be published by Strange Chemistry last year. Sadly, the publisher closed down, but I was excited to hear that Some Fine Day was being published by Skyscape. I have to apologize for writing such a short review, but my memory of this book is a little vague (I'm bad with details!). I'm writing this review based on some notes I had from when I first read it. I do vividly remember enjoying this title and being amazed by the creativity the author had implemented in her story. I remember liking the characters in this book. The main character, especially, while not entirely special for someone in a dystopian novel was a smart girl and I admired her for the choices that she made. For me though, what I really loved was the plot and the world building. Kat Ross had some very interesting ideas that she weaved together and she explored with depth in Some Fine Day. The plot had the ability to surprise me a few times which barely ever happens to me in YA books. I especially remember being captivated by the hypercanes, weather elements. They were a little bit confusing, but I was completely fascinated. The world building needed a bit more work, but I think the next book will probably develop that further. Overall, this was an interesting book with some very creative elements. I know a lot of you are over the dystopian phase, but give Some Fine Day a shot because it might impress you like it did me.
