Loving Chris Henderson would be wrong. Diabolically disastrous. I mean, what is there about him to love? He’s moody, bossy, brooding, a control freak, and that’s on a good day … but there was one achingly obvious fact that haunted my every thought, every minute of every day …

He sure could kiss.

As the countdown to the new millennium begins, there is one thing everyone agrees on: no one wants to be in Onslow for New Year’s Eve.

So that can only mean one thing: road trip!

No longer the mousey, invisible, shy girl from years ago, Tammy Maskala is finally making up for all those lost summers. A new year with new friends, which astoundingly includes the bossy boy behind the bar, Chris Henderson.

She likes her new friends (at least most of them), so why does she secretly feel so out of place?

After chickening out on the trip, a last-minute change of heart sees Tammy racing to the Onslow Hotel, fearing she’s missed her chance for a ride. The last thing she expected to meet was a less-than-happy Onslow Boy leaning against his black panel van.

Now the countdown begins to reach the others at Point Shank before the party is over and the new year has begun. Alone in a car with only the infuriating Chris Henderson, Tammy can’t help but feel this is a disastrous start to what could have been a great adventure. But when the awkward road trip takes an unexpected turn, Tammy soon discovers that the way her traitorous heart feels about Chris is the biggest disaster of all.

Fogged up windows, moonlight swimming, bad karaoke and unearthed secrets; after this one summer nothing will ever be the same again.

Personal Thoughts

I've never read anything by C.J Duggan before but I've heard so much praise for her Summer series that I knew I would also be a fan of it. I picked up That One Summer one afternoon and couldn't stop reading because of how entertaining it was and I've decided that I need to read the rest of the series immediately.

What made That One Summer such a wonderful read were the amazing characters that C.J Duggan has crafted. From the primary characters to the secondary characters, they were all so well fleshed-out and full of life that it felt like these were actual people I knew. C.J Duggan really developed each and everyone of these characters. Our main character, Tammy, was remarkable. She was easy to connect with because of how nice she was. She was also such a passionate, loving and loyal friend that it was hard to not fall for her character. Getting to know her better throughout the book was a blast for me. The other main character, Chris, was as alluring as Tammy. He had that mysterious broody guy thing going on for him in the beginning, but as he slowly started to unravel his layers in front of Tammy, I began to see what a sweetheart he was. He was not only gorgeous, but he was also caring. He had the whole package!

That One Summer had one of my favorite plots in contemporary novels ; road trip. If you've known me for a while, you must already know much I adore road trip books, so I was excited by its addition in this book. I thought it was done in a great way and I loved the descriptions of the Australian scenes and settings the characters passed by on their trip. The romance was also one that I enjoyed. Tammy and Chris have known each other for a long time when the book starts, but you still get to watch their romance grow slowly over the course of the book. I initially thought that the book would focus entirely on the romance, but I was glad that that wasn't the case. I personally thought the book concentrated on the adorable friendship between all of the characters. I loved that because they had such wonderful interactions. Reading them banter with each other was an absolute delight and I felt like I got to know them so much throughout the book even though I haven't read the first 2 books. C.J Duggan is a talented author and I can't wait to read more from her. I also have to admire her for not adding any kind of overwhelming drama, which led to this book being a fun and adorable read.

A book that takes a look at true friendship, That One Summer is perfect for readers looking for a fun summer book with a road trip.
