Summary (from Goodreads)

Title : Attempting Elizabeth
Author : Jessica Grey

Publication Date : January 24th 2013
Publisher : Tall House Books
Goodreads - Amazon - Barnes & Noble

Kelsey Edmundson is a geek and proud of it. She makes no secret of her love for TV, movies, and, most especially, books. After a bad breakup, she retreats into her favorite novel, Pride and Prejudice, wishing she had some of the wit and spirit of Elizabeth Bennett.

One night at a party Kelsey meets handsome Australian bartender Mark Barnes. From then on, she always seems to run into him when she least expects it. No matter how Kelsey tries, she always seems to say the wrong thing.

After a particularly gaffe-filled evening around Mark, Kelsey is in desperate need of inspiration from Jane Austen. She falls asleep reading Darcy’s letter to Lizzy and awakens to find herself in an unfamiliar place that looks and sounds suspiciously like her favorite book. Has she somehow been transported into Pride and Prejudice, or is it just a dream?

As Kelsey tries to discover what’s happening to her, she must also discover her own heart. Is Mark Barnes destined to be her Mr. Darcy? In the end, she must decide whether attempting to become Elizabeth is worth the risk or if being Kelsey Edmundson is enough.

Personal Thoughts

Like many people, Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite classics. When I found out that in Attempting Elizabeth the main character actually travels into the book, I was beyond ecstatic and didn't wait a second to jump into the book. Attempting Elizabeth was a fun and sweet story about a young woman discovering who she really is.

Kelsey was a very likeable character who was easy to connect with. At the start of the book, she was heart-broken after a terrible break-up. Her way to cope was read. That itself was enough to make me love her character. I also liked how Kelsey was a seriously flawed character, but over the course of the book, we watch her grow into this beautiful well-fleshed out character as she learns about herself from her experience in Pride and Prejudice. Not only does she learn more about herself, but she also begins to realize how sweet of a guy Mark, an Australian bartender she meets, is. Mark was also such a likeable love interest. He was sweet, charming and there was nothing about him that was not to like. I liked how he never pushed Kelsey into wanting to be in a relationship, but let her slowly come to him.

Like I mentioned above, the plot was a lot about Kelsey learning to grow up and accept who she was. Her scenes in Pride and Prejudice was so much fun. This book was like every book lovers dreams! Who hasn't thought about wanting to jump into their favorite books and experience everything the characters are experiencing? That was why I thought Attempting Elizabeth was such an entertaining read. While a lot of the scenes directly taken from Pride and Prejudice, I liked that Jessica Grey also showed us scenes that can't be seen in P&P. I especially enjoyed all the scenes with Georgiana and Wickham. The romance between Kelsey and Mark was well-paced and I enjoyed the fact that they didn't immediately jump into a relationship, but waited to understand each other better first. One thing you should know when going into the book that you should most definitely treat this as a contemporary and not a sci-fi book because you will be dissatisfied as there are no explanations as to how Kelsey manages to get into Pride and Prejudice.

Overall, Attempting Elizabeth was a lovely book and I would definitely recommend the book to fans of Pride and Prejudice looking for something like a retelling.
