Personal Thoughts
As a Biology student, any book containing some topic or sub-topic of Biology always interests me. Upon reading a couple of reviews, I learned that Inhale was actually a book about whales. I knew that this was immediately going into my wish-list. Thankfully for me, I didn't have to wait too long to finally read the book since I won it in a giveaway from Kara at Great Imaginations. Inhale definitely lived up to all my expectations.
Dr Zoe Morgan is a marine biologist who specializes in whale research. Her work lands her in Hervey Bay, Queensland, Australia. While working, Zoe finds herself on the brink of death when she's saved by a hot rocker, Gavin Cassidy. Except, he isn't there when she wakes up. Soon after, she keeps having these strange dreams, all of which feature Gavin. Gavin is, in fact, a Sentinel. His role is to basically assist and help Wyldlings, humans, in the Dreaming, the dream world, and to prevent the Elementals from entering this dream realm. Gavin hasn't been asked to help a Wyldling in a very long time. Soon, he realizes that the Dreaming is slowly being destroyed and the key to saving this realm is Zoe.
What was truly fascinating in Inhale were the marvelous characters. All of them were so very well-fleshed out, that you cannot help but appreciate them, even if they are the villains. Zoe, the whale biologist, was a strong-willed and determined woman who was ready to go to lengths to procure what she wants. Her independence and her boldness made her a fiery character. I loved how passionate she was about her work. Whenever she talked about the whales, you could sense how much devotion and love she had for her. She was someone hardworking, diligent and very enthusiastic. Zoe also had the desire to be loved. Her relationship with Gavin really proved that.
Initially, Gavin was a slightly broken character. His partner had died a few years back and he was still drowning in that guilt. His failure to protect her made him feel useless and led him to do things he really didn't want to do. When he meets Zoe, the reader gets to see his protective, tender and kick-ass side.
The secondary characters were also all excellent. They were all well-developed and well-integrated into the story. Since the book is written in the third person, you actually get to see all the different sides of the plot via the different characters. Scarlet was definitely my favorite character in Inhale. She was an impulsive, vindictive and foxy character. She might be the villain, but it wasn't difficult to really like her character. As a matter of fact, I even liked her more than the main character herself.
The romance in the book was, at simultaneously, delicate and fervid. Gavin and Zoe shared some really intense and sizzling chemistry, but at the same time they were also very affectionate towards each other. Their relationship might be very unrealistic since they both get to know about each other through dreams, but it worked for me. Gavin and Zoe really meshed together as a couple. I loved how Gavin slowly started feel alive with the help of Zoe. The love that they felt for each other was honestly believable and unmistakable.
If I were to give stars based on originality, this book definitely obtain 5+ stars from me. The story line was unique and enchanting. I adored the whole mythology and slightly paranormal elements. The author did a great job at really coming up with something not only genuinely original, but also highly entertaining. The plot was well executed and the author makes sure that all your questions are answered by the end of the story. Her writing was simple, yet beautiful. From the start to the end, not once did I feel turned off by the book. The addition of the whales was, in my opinion, had me enraptured with the story. Inhale proved that Kendall Grey is one skilled writer.
Inhale was a captivating story about a complex, yet delightful world. The narrative will grip you, the characters will entertain you, the romance will thrill you and the plot itself will have you devouring the book in a matter of hours. Inhale was a definite page-flipper.
