Review : Airhead by Meg Cabot

Summary (from Goodreads)

EM WATTS IS GONE.

Emerson Watts didn’t even want to go to the new SoHo Stark Megastore grand opening. But someone needed to look out for her sister, Frida, whose crush, British heartthrob Gabriel Luna, would be singing and signing autographs there—along with the newly appointed Face of Stark, teen supermodel sensation Nikki Howard.

How was Em to know that disaster would strike, changing her—and life as she’d known it—forever? One bizarre accident later, and Em Watts, always the tomboy, never the party princess, is no longer herself. Literally.

Personal Thoughts

I've read almost all of Meg Cabot's books when I was younger and I loved most of them. I was really excited to read Airhead. For one, the premise sounded so interesting. Also, I loved the cover! However, the book didn't completely satisfy me. I felt that it was lacking in numerous departments.

Emerson Watts, the main character, is asked to go to the opening of the new Stark Megastore along with her younger sister, Frida, so that she can meet Gabriel Luna, a British singer. There, Em and Frida also meet Nikki Howard, teen supermodel. In an attempt to save her sister, Em pushes Frida away and suddenly a giant plasma TV from above crashes on Em. A month later, she wakes up in a weird hospital in Nikki Howard's body. Now, Em has to live as Nikki and she doesn't know whether she can handle it or not.

I found Em to be a very likable character. She was a total sweetheart. She had the whole tom-boy thing going on on the outside, but on the outside she loved being a girl as well. She lived on video games, more specifically JourneyQuest, and medical documentaries on surgeries and operations. However, she also secretly read her sister's romance novels and Cosmo magazines. Her voice was very engaging. Some of things she said were pretty hilarious and I really enjoyed her as a main character. When she finds herself in Nikki's body, she was a little confused at first. She didn't know what to do anymore and at some point she wanted to ask that she got another body. Em was a little narrow minded at first in the sense that she thought that a super model job was something easy. In Nikki's body, she finally came to realize that being a super model was definitely not an effortless task. It was really great to see her learn more about the world of a super model and also eradicate her prejudices on them. However, later on, it started to annoy me a little that Em actually started being a model. She didn't like the modelling jobs as such, but she loved the idea that guys fell to her feet when she smiled, that people gave her attention and that she could do whatever she wanted to. In my opinion, she began to appreciate Nikki's life a little too much. Other than that, Em was a delightful character.

My main problem from the book arises from the secondary characters. I don't think there's anyone I really liked. They all acted extremely dumb and I found that to be extremely frustrating. Most of the secondary characters acted dim-witted and downright stupid. I found myself having a tough time tolerating their presences in the book. Lulu, Nikki Howard's best friend and roommate, was so irritating. I swear the girl had like an IQ that was barely existent. I heard that she got better throughout the series and I really hope she does because I really couldn't stand her in Airhead. I found myself skipping the pages she appeared on. Frida, Em's younger sister was as bugging as Lulu. She was the kind of character who craved popularity and beauty. To say that I didn't like her would be a total understatement. Her sister had nearly died and lost her body in order to protect her and all she can think about is whether Em in Nikki's body must be kissing hot guys like Brandon Stark and Gabriel Luna. She acted somewhat overexcited and hyper. Christopher, Em's best friend and crush, was the only fairly character I found to be intriguing. However, I was disappointed that the reader barely got to know him. Hopefully, all the secondary characters will evolve for the better in the next installment of the Airhead series.

To be honest, although the plot was fairly unbelievable, I found myself enjoying it. I, especially, loved the little knowledge I obtained on the modelling world provided in the book since I know next to nothing about it. The plot was definitely very entertaining, but there was a certain spark missing to make it really shine. Also, I didn't really enjoy the way things ended in the book. The story just abruptly stopped and I had no idea that it would end.
Meg Cabot's writing style has always been entertaining. She always manages to add a somewhat humorous tone to all her books, no matter what the subject matter. When I first started reading, I thought it have a serious tone because of the topic it touches, but I was surprised to find that Meg Cabot's witty and amusing side was also present in the book.

Overall, I might not have enjoyed some of the characters, but there's no doubt that the plot is entertaining. One advice : Don't go into the book expecting something serious, because it most definitely was not. Airhead is a delightful book that will have you laughing at the craziness of the whole situation Em ends up in!
