Bad girls burn hot…

Red is the color of Kia Alcott's hair.
It's her temper, which blazes hot and always gets Kia into way too much trouble.
And it's the color of fire. Fires that Kia can start…just by thinking about them.

When her latest “episode” gets her kicked out of school, Kia is shipped off to her grandmother, who works for the wealthy Blackwoods. It's an estate shrouded in secrets, surrounded by rules, and presided over by a family that is far from normal…including the gorgeous and insolent Ethan Blackwood.

Ethan knows far more about the dangers of the forest surrounding the estate than Kia can ever imagine. For this forest has teeth, and Ethan is charged with protecting the outside world from its vicious mysteries.

But inside, even the most vibrant shade of red doesn't stand a chance against the dark secrets of the Blackwood family…

Personal Thoughts

Whenever I need a fun and entertaining YA paranormal book, I know I can count on Alyxandra Harvey to delivery. Seriously guys, she writes some seriously enjoyable books that draw you in and have you hooked onto the story. Red, her latest novel, was no different.

One thing I always love about Alyxandra Harvey's books are her characters. She crafts some delightful gems that will have you howling in laughter. In Red, she introduces us to Kia, who was an awesome character. Not only was she sassy and witty, but she was also bold. For me, she was a character who was easy to mesh with. I laughed at her snarkiness and enjoyed being inside her head. The love interest, Ethan, however, I didn't immediately warm up to. He took some time getting used to and while I loved that we also got his POV, I had a very strong preference for Kia's chapters. He was shrouded in so much mystery, which ended up in me being hesitant about his motivations. He did eventually charm me and by the end, I was very much a fan of his. The more we got to know about his personality and just how many obstacles he had faced in his young life, the easier he became to love. I would have personally liked to learn more about the secondary characters. While they were certainly enjoyable, they didn't really come to life to me, especially the villain, who I wanted to be a bit more twisty than he was.

The plot in Red though was great! I thought it was brimming with creativity and I loved all the ideas that the author had. Discovering the enchanted forest and the darkness that lurked within it was certainly entertaining and even more engaging was the story line with the Cabal, a group of kids that had to ensure that the danger didn't reach the other side of the forest. It was completely enchanting and it helped that Alyxandra Harvey had a vibrant and vivid writing style. Red also had a romance that started off antagonistically. The dynamics between Kia and Ethan was amusing and I loved their banter together. When they finally got together as a couple, I loved all their sweet moments and the tenderness they had between them.

All in all, Red was an excellent stand-alone book which pulled me in from the very start. If you enjoy snarky characters, cute romances and strong plot lines, you want this book!

Author Biography

Alyxandra Harvey lives in a stone Victorian house in Ontario, Canada with a few resident ghosts who are allowed to stay as long as they keep company manners. She loves medieval dresses, used to be able to recite all of The Lady of Shalott by Tennyson, and has been accused, more than once, of being born in the wrong century. She believes this to be mostly true except for the fact that she really likes running water, women’s rights, and ice cream.
Among her favourite books are ‘The Wood Wife’ by Terri Windling, ‘Jane Eyre’ by Charlotte Bronte, and of course, ‘Pride and Prejudice’ by Jane Austen. Elizabeth Bennet is her hero because she’s smart and sassy, and Mr. Darcy is, well, yum.

Aside from the ghosts, she also lives with husband and their dogs. She likes cinnamon lattes, tattoos and books.
