There comes a time in every witch's life when she must choose her path. Darlena's friends have already chosen, so why is it so hard for her to make up her mind? Now, Darlena is out of time. Under pressure from Hecate, the Queen of all witches, Darlena makes a rash decision to choose Red magic, a path no witch in her right mind would dare take. As a Red witch, she will be responsible for chaos and mayhem, drawing her deep into darkness. Will the power of Red magic prove too much for Darlena, or will she learn to control it before it's too late?

DAUGHTER OF CHAOS is the first in the RED MAGIC paranormal YA trilogy.

Personal Thoughts

I'm always up for any book that involves witches and I don't think I've read many good YA witch stories, so I was quick to join the blog tour for Daughter of Chaos. While it may have started out a little rough for me, I ended up enjoying it enough by the end to make me want to pick up the next book in the series when it comes out.

Darlena was a main character I struggled to connect with at first. I think part of that reason is because we don't really get to know her before she makes a decision about what kind of witch she wants to become. I did eventually warm up to her as she became more accepting of her heritage and learning to deal with her decision. She's also blunt and not afraid to speak out her thoughts, which makes her quite refreshing. One of my favorite aspects about this book has to be the involvement of the family. YA paranormal books where the parents are aware of the whole supernatural element are so rare, so I'm always delighted to find books with the opposite situation. It makes for more realistic books (even though we're talking about paranormal books here).

The plot is pretty much action-packed from start to finish. As soon as you jump into the book, you're thrown into a story that is fast-paced. It took me some time to adjust to the story line, but once I did, I found myself being thoroughly entertained. The world-building was what I thought was pretty fascinating. I loved the idea of different kinds of witches and the use of mythology to enhance the story line. It worked perfectly for me and I think a lot readers are going to appreciate that.

Overall, Daughter of Chaos was a strong debut of a series and I look forward to reading more from this series.
