Summary (from Goodreads)

Title : My Ex From Hell (The Blooming Goddess #1)
Author : Tellulah Darling
Publication Date : April 1st 2013
Publisher : Te Da Media
Goodreads - Amazon - Barnes & Noble

Sixteen-year-old Sophie Bloom wishes she’d been taught the following:
a) Bad boy’s presence (TrOuBlE) + teen girl’s brain (DraMa) = TrAuMa (Highly unstable and very volatile.)
b) The Genus Greekulum Godissimus is notable for three traits: 1) awesome abilities, 2) grudges, and 3) hook-ups, break-ups, and in-fighting that puts cable to shame.

Prior to the Halloween dance, Sophie figures her worst problems involve adolescent theatrics, bitchy teen yoga girls, and being on probation at her boarding school for mouthy behaviour. Then she meets bad boy Kai and gets the kiss that rocks her world.

Literally.

This breath stealing lip lock reawakens Sophie’s true identity: Persephone, Goddess of Spring. She’s key to saving humanity in the war between the Underworld and Olympus, target numero uno of Hades and Zeus, and totally screwed.

Plus there’s also the little issue that Sophie’s last memory as Persephone was just before someone tried to murder her.

Big picture: master her powers, get her memories back, defeat Persephone’s would be assassin, and save the world. Also, sneak into the Underworld to retrieve stolen property, battle the minions of Hades and Zeus, outwit psycho nymphs, slay a dragon, rescue a classmate, keep from getting her butt expelled from the one place designed to keep her safe …

… and stop kissing Kai, Prince of the Underworld.

My Ex From Hell is a YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology smackdown. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book one of this teen fantasy romance series. Compared to Kai and Sophie, Romeo and Juliet had it easy.

Personal Thoughts

Combining Greek mythology and comedy, My Ex From Hell was a hilarious, fun and thrilling book that had me entertained all throughout!

Our main character is Sophie Bloom, a 16 year old who comes to the realization that she is the Greek Goddess, Persephone. Sophie was such a fun character. She was snarky, witty and funny. She had me snorting and giggling unattractively on so many occasions with the thoughts that went through her head. Sophie was what I call a spunky and feisty character. She wasn't the best character I have ever come across, but she was memorable. My Ex From Hell also had one of the best cast of secondary characters I've ever come across from Theo, or Prometheus, Sophie's gay best friend to Hannah, her human best friend. What made these characters so entertaining were their interactions with the main character and with each other. These interactions felt realistic and it was very enjoyable for me as a reader to watch them banter and bicker. The love interest, or the ex in question, Kai was the only one I wished was a bit more developed than he was. He had that whole sexy and mysterious underworld God thing going on for him and we never get to know him like we get to know the other characters. He was also so secretive that I never knew whether he was trustworthy or not. From the little we got to know him, I could tell that he was one cocky guy who was a great match for our heroine.

Greek mythology is one of my favorite themes in YA books. I thought the world building in My Ex From Hell was well done. Tellulah Darling made sure that the reader was aware of Sophie's background and there were enough details about the mythology itself to help me understand what was going on. I've read multiple books with Greek mythology and I loved this author's take of it. The plot too, while predictable, was enjoyable. I was very much invested in it, but I reckon that's because the characters were so awesome. There was also a hint of romance, but I was glad that it didn't overshadow the plot. The banter between them was full of sexual chemistry and although I wasn't convinced by Kai's intentions, I thought they made a great couple. Tellulah Darling's writing was also quite addicting. Her talent lies in writing dialogues that were realistic and so darn amusing. This was my first book by her, but it's not going to be my last. I won't hesitate to add her to the list of self-published authors who come highly recommended from me.

If you're looking for a funny YA paranormal book with a spunky main character and an entertaining plot line to read in between all those dark books, I recommend My Ex From Hell.

Tellulah Darling's Top 5 Romantic Comedy Films

1) When Harry Met Sally - This movie is the gold standard of romcoms. It's funny, it's insightful, the characters are flawed and deluded and above all its totally fabulous and all about love. Also, I'm a sucker for "best friends becoming more" films. In fact my first novel, Sam Cruz's Infallible Guide to Getting Girls was written precisely because I love this film so much.

2) The Princess Bride - I've met people who don't like this film with its whimsey and wit and magic and love. They are cold dead people. No judgement. I'm just saying. It also wins for best way to say "I love you."

3) Scott Pilgrim Vs the World - There have been a lot of crappy romcoms in the past decade or so but this isn't one of them. The premise of having to battle Ramona's seven evil exes is so fun and executed with such glee. The love triangle (square?) is wonderful and I love Kieran Culkan. There is no downside to this film. So over the top and yet wonderfully deadpan at the same time.

4) His Girl Friday - If, like me, you like your banter witty and your leads so very deluded in their feelings for each other, then this is your film. The dialogue is gunfire fast and whip smart. I love, loathe, and love again Cary Grant's character, while Rosalind Russell gives as good as she gets. A classic for all the best reasons.

5) Strictly Ballroom - Any film who's HEA is captured in a joyous dance number is okay by me. Plus it's an ugly duckling story and the scene with Doris Day singing "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps" makes me swoon like nothing else. Another totally over-the-top film but if you can't go big when it comes to love, then go home.

I hope I gave you some new romcom favs today. Let me know which ones you love!
