Summary (from Goodreads)

Title : Unspoken (Woodlands #2)
Author : Jen Frederick
Publication Date : September 13th 2013
Publisher : Self-Published
Goodreads - Amazon - Barnes & Noble

Whore. Slut. Typhoid Mary.

I've been called all these at Central College. One drunken night, one act of irresponsible behavior, and my reputation was ruined. Guys labeled me as easy and girls shied away. To cope, I stayed away from Central social life and away from Central men, so why is it that my new biology lab partner is so irresistible to me?

He's everything I shouldn't want. A former Marine involved in illegal fighting with a quick trigger temper and an easy smile for all the women. His fists aren't the danger to me, though, it's his charm. He's sliding his way into my heart and I'm afraid that he's going to be the one to break me.

Impulsive. Unthinking. Hot tempered.

I allow instinct to rule my behavior. If it feels good, do it, has been my motto because if I spend too much time thinking, I'll begin to remember exactly where I came from. At Central College, I've got fighting and I've got women and I thought I was satisfied until I met her.

She's everything I didn't realize I wanted and the more time I spend with her, the more I want her. But she's been hurt too much in the past and I don't want to be the one to break her. I know I should walk away, but I just can't.

Personal Thoughts

I read Undeclared a couple of months ago and thought it was very well-written. I was excited for Unspoken because it featured Bo, one of my favorite secondary characters in the first book. I'm so glad I decided to give this read a shot, because it's one of the best written New Adult reads out there.

After losing her virginity to a lacrosse player at her college, Annmarie is labelled a slut and a whore. There are false rumors spreading about her on how she slept with everyone on the lacrosse team. Because of that she keeps away from campus life except for going to classes. Annmarie, or AM as she preferred to call herself, was a character who had a lot going on for her. Everywhere she went, people kept calling her names because of her so-called promiscuity. It was easy to sympathize with her because despite her showing that the rumors were not affecting her on the exterior, they were eating her on the inside. I thought she was brave to go along with her life despite what everyone thought of her. There were times I was frustrated with AM for not standing up for herself and not doing anything about the rumors, but I understood where she was coming from and understood that she was scared and insecure. However, that didn't make it less annoying. Over the course of the book, we watch her grow into a more mature girl than she is, learning to become an individual who knew how to stand up for herself and to others to clear out the rumors. However, she couldn't have done so without the help and support of the smexy Bo. Bo was such a complex and intriguing character. I love being inside his head and I loved how he was one of the few people who refused to believe the rumors about AM. He was a sweetheart and I grew to love him even more throughout the book. He was a caring and supportive guy who was entirely too lovable. The author did make him the kind of guy who loved to indulge in multiple one-night stands, but I loved that Bo wasn't ashamed of it nor did he boast about it. He, too, had his fair share of issues, and learned to deal with them throughout the story.

The romance in Unspoken was beautifully paced. Bo and AM definitely had an attraction to each other since the first page, but they really got to know each other an emotional level before they dived into a romantic relationship. I liked the slow pace of their relationship and I liked how despite how hard Bo tried to pursue AM, she didn't give in easily. What was even better was that when they got together as a couple, there was no unnecessary drama that impeded their relationship. It was realistic and had a calmness to it that pleased me. Bo and AM also shared a healthy relationship and they helped each other grow and face their demons. I loved how despite everything, those two stuck together. They made a truly wonderful couple. While the romance was definitely one of the highlights of this book, it was the message that Unspoken sent out. Labeling a girl as a slut that happens way too often in real life, whether it's because of the way they dress or because of their promiscuity. I liked that the author tried to spread a message in this book : rumors and name-calling might be harsh, but you shouldn't be afraid to stand up to your fears. It's definitely a strong message that women of all age could make good use of. Another favorite aspect I liked about Unspoken was the writing, especially the dialogues. There was a nice flow in the dialogues and it was almost like watching people converse right in front of you.

Unspoken was a successful New Adult book for me. Not only were the characters beautifully fleshed-out, but it was also more than just a romance between two broken characters. It was actually a book that spread a positive message. I definitely recommend this book to fans of the genre.
