Summary (from Goodreads)

Title : Inbetween (Kissed by Death #1)
Author : Tara Fuller
Publisher : Entangled Publishing
Publication Date : August 28th 2012
Goodreads - The Book Depository

Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky — and unending — lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.

It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.

Personal Thoughts

Reapers aren't a very common theme in YA books. Because of that, I was intrigued by the concept of Inbetween by Tara Fuller. The book was one of my most anticipated novel of 2012 and it even featured on one of my Waiting On Wednesdays. I must say, Inbetween was not what I expected it to be.

Three years ago, Emma survived a car crash that killed her dad. Ever since that day, she has been trying to avoid being killed. Finn is a reaper who saved Emma's life three years ago. When he attracts the attention of evil on her, he vows to protect her no matter what the cost.

The characters in Inbetween were different from any other characters I've come across. They were so honest and genuine that I couldn't help but love them. The book was told in the point of view of both Finn and Emma and in that way it helped me grow closer to both characters, getting to know the intricacies of their mind. Finn was a unique male character in that he totally avoided the cocky bad boy stereotype. As much as I enjoy bad boys, it can get dull at times. So, I was really happy that Finn was a total sweetheart. In a way, he was innocent and that made him all the more attractive. However, he could also be strong and very protective when needed.  Emma ,too, was innocent. There was no doubt that she was a good girl. I actually expected her to be the "damsel-in-distress" kind of character, but she proved me wrong as the story progressed. There was this need within her to stand up for herself. She didn't want others helping her out and she would really go to lengths in order to protect herself. I liked the streak of independence she possessed. Both Finn and Emma were slightly broken characters, but they never allowed their weaknesses to impact their lives in a way that would make them sound full of self-pity. I'm going to be honest here. I don't think that Finn and Emma will appeal to all readers. While I loved the main characters, the secondary characters were the ones that truly stole my heart. They were an enjoyable bunch and I'm actually looking forward to getting to know them a whole lot better in the next installments of this series. [I keep stalking Tara on Twitter and she's ensured her followers that we're going to see more of her secondary characters]

Inbetween is a YA paranormal story with a focus on the romance. While I'm not into books that solely focus on the romantic aspect, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Inbetween. At the first read, it might seem that there's an instant-love kind of relationship, but don't let that put you off. As the plot develops, you'll realize that their relationship is a lot deeper than that. The romance was the kind that was just so sweet that it pulled at my heart strings. Sure, it annoyed me a little whenever Finn was like "I can't be with you", but it was understandable. I loved that the author included elements from Finn and Emma's past that helped us get to know why they liked each other so much. Plus, I was fascinated by the idea of reapers. Tara Fuller's world was absolutely fascinating and I was completely enthralled by it. How does reaping work? How do they become reapers? Those were all questions that I had when I first plunged into the story. Fortunately for me, the author really did answer most of my questions. From the very start, the author revealed who the villain of the story was. I thought she did a great job at portraying the evil emanating from this character. Tara Fuller is a gifted writer. There's something about her writing that's just mesmerizing. From the very first chapter, her words pulled me in and tangled me in a web. This might sound weird, but there's something peaceful about her writing.

In the end, I thought Inbetween was a sweet and heartfelt story. I don't this will be the kind of book that everybody will enjoy, but if you go into it with an open mind, expecting a romance, then you might be pleasantly surprised by it.
