Brody Markham has endured a nightmare, spending the last five years in prison and losing everything that was dear to him. Now he’s back home, trying to survive in a world he doesn’t recognize anymore. While his family and friends desperately try to reach through to him, he shelters himself further and further away from their love.

Alyssa Myers has worked her entire life to distance herself from the luxurious and privileged lifestyle in which she was raised. Running her non-profit agency, The Haven, she is content to spend her days helping abused animals find sanctuary, which fulfills her in a way that money just can’t buy.

Maybe it’s that she recognizes in Brody some of the same characteristics she sees in her homeless wards, but Alyssa is powerless to stop her personal quest to make Brody whole again.

While Brody struggles to surface from the darkness, Alyssa tries to protect her heart in case he’s not willing to accept the light that she offers him.

Personal Thoughts

Having read the first book a few months ago and enjoying, I was looking forward to reading Make It Double because Brody, the main character in this book, was so intriguing to me in the previous book. I wanted to unravel him and find out what was going on inside that head of his. While I only liked On the Rocks, I loved Make It Double because it lived up to all my expectations.

Brody was a tortured soul in the first book and he still was at the beginning of this book. An unfortunate event in his past had sent him to prison and had left him feeling bitter, angry and moody. Despite that, Brody was the kind of character that sparked an interest in me, making me want to know his thoughts and feelings. In Make It Double, we get his POV. It became so much easier to understand where Brody was coming from and his secrets and situation broke my heart. He was a victim and no one in his family knew. We watch as Brody begins to open up to the readers and it made me incredibly happy that he had his leading lady, Alyssa, by his side. Ah Alyssa! She was such a lovely and sweet girl. I loved how she went against the stereotypical rich girl. She was so passionate about her animal shelter. I have to admit that the scenes of her taking care of her animals were my favorite. She was also very genuine, down-to-earth and didn't judge people. She was the perfect match for Brody.

The romance in Make It Double starts from dislike and eventually evolves into a friendship that develops into more. I loved watching Brody slowly opening up to Alyssa. Their romance was tender and sexy at the same time. Brody and Alyssa helped each other grow into better individuals and that is always the best kind of romance. While the romance was one of the highlights of the novel, what I loved more were the themes of friendship and family. Brody, especially, was surrounded by a loving family. There was this one scene in the book where Brody comes out with his secret to his mother and the scene was absolutely beautiful and touching. NA often portrays family life in a negative way, so to have Sawyer Bennett make Brody have a loving, caring and understanding family was wise.

If you're a fan of Sawyer Bennett, Make It Double should also appeal to you. It was a sweet and romantic story that brought a smile to my face.
