"Our baby died on prom night, and nothing was ever the same again."

Corabelle doesn’t feel like any of the other college girls. On what should have been one of the happiest nights of her life, she and her boyfriend Gavin watched a nurse disconnect the ventilator from their seven-day-old baby. During the funeral two days later, Gavin walked out and never returned.

Since then, her life has been a spiral of disasters. The only thing that has helped is her ability to black out whenever the pain gets too hard to bear, a habit that has become an addiction.

When Gavin shows up in her astronomy class four years later, he is hell-bent on getting her back, insisting she forgive him. Corabelle knows she can’t resist the touch that fills the empty ache that has haunted her since he left. But if he learns what she has done, if he follows the trail back through her past, her secrets will destroy their love completely. And once again, she’ll lose the only person who always believed she was innocent.

Personal Thoughts

Forever Innocent was an emotional and interesting read that had me latched onto the book for some time. However, I do think that there was something missing from the book to make it truly stand out from the rest of NA books that deal with pregnancy.

1.Characters
The characters were all very likeable. However, I felt like I never connected with neither Corabelle nor Gavin. For an emotional story such as Forever Innocent, I felt like it was almost essential to be able to understand what the characters were going through by being able to connect with them to experience the emotions that the book is supposed to bombard you. So, yes, while I liked the characters enough, I thought they needed to be more developed to make them stand out.

2.Emotions
I thought the author pretty much nailed it with the emotions in Forever Innocent. She wrote a story that brought about all sorts of sad feelings in me and there were a couple of scenes in the book that almost destroyed me because of how sorrowful they were. Deanna Roy's talent definitely lies in portraying grief of characters in an honest and raw way.

3.Romance
Gavin and Corabelle had been in love with each other for a long time until Corabelle gets pregnant and has a miscarriage. I liked that there was no insta-love in this book because that would have taken away something from the book. When they meet again in a college classroom years later, Gavin tries hard to win Corabelle back. I liked how Corabelle didn't just give in to Gavin and was actually hesitant about getting into a relationship once again with him knowing how much he had hurt her. I also liked how Gavin refused not to fight for her. It definitely made the romance realistic and  powerful.

I wish I could say more about what was missing to make this book exceptional. You know how sometimes everything in a book is to your liking, but there's just that spark missing to make it one of your favorites? Well, that's what I thought made Forever Innocent a 3 stars read instead of a 4 stars read. Another thing that frustrated me was the abrupt ending which signals this being a series. (On that note, I'm so sick of NA contemporaries turning into series when they would work better as standalones!) Despite that, if you are a fan of New Adult books that deal with intense themes, this is definitely worth the read.
