Secretly crushing

Crushed by a tragedy

Charlee May’s been crushing on Dexter Hollingworth since she was fifteen. Five years later, a horrific skiing disaster at Mason’s Ski Lift Resort leaves her millionaire dad critically injured and her mom dead at the hands of Dexter operating the lifts. Charlee is suddenly the sole caretaker for her little brother while their world falls apart.

Dexter couldn’t be more different from Charlee. He’s tattooed, avoids exclusive relationships and his Dad has a fair share of illegal dealings. With Dexter’s reputation, almost everyone believes he planned the Mason’s skiing disaster.

And after all these years he’s still crushing on Charlee May, the girl who’s too good for him.

When this cruel twist of fate ties Charlee’s family and Dexter’s reputation together, Charlee and Dexter wonder if their feelings are reciprocated, while Dexter discovers his dad is trying to steal the May’s millionaire fortune.

But like an addiction, one look, one touch, one taste—they’re hooked no matter the consequences.

Author Interview

Hi Rebecca! Welcome to Nick's Book Blog.

Thanks!

1. First question, describe your book in a Tweet.

Drowning in You is an emotional journey between two people secretly crushing on each other for years, suddenly connected by a tragedy. (and 11 characters to spare!)

2. Drowning In You is a New Adult title. What made you want to write a New Adult book?

I started reading New Adult books mid-last year when I didn’t know it was a genre—I just picked up similar novels. I started writing Drowning in You at the beginning of August.

Not knowing much about New Adult made things difficult. Having the characters as 16- to 17-year-olds was too young, yet they weren’t adults either. I just wrote the story and put it aside until I understood New Adult later in the year and realised I’d written a New Adult novel without knowing it at the time!

3. How is your book different from other New Adult titles?

I like reading smut—don’t get me wrong—but I can’t write it. Drowning in You has a poetic voice and a deep emotional feel to it. Dare I say it partially has a Literary Fiction feel? It’s written in a different style to most New Adult titles. Also, it doesn’t have typical “bad boy” or “good girl” characters; the characters are their own people.

4. What is your current favorite New Adult book?

Ahhhhh…I can’t choose! Okay, um… * searches Goodreads shelves *

I’m back! Okay, it would have to be Tasting Never by CM Stunich.

5. Which character would you say was the hardest to write about?

Both main characters were quite easy to fall into their voice. The hardest would have had to be a supporting character, Elliot. He’s the guy who also wants Charlee and being secondary to my love for Dexter, the main guy, it took a while to understand him.

6. My final question, you live in Australia!! How cool is that? Anyways, what's your favorite thing about your hometown?

Lol. There are many things I like, but I know how lucky we are here regarding weather. We never get tornados, hurricanes, twisters…I don’t even know if Melbourne has ever had any. And anyway, we have enough fires and floods for our share of bad weather.

Thanks for taking your time to answer these questions!

Well, they were awesome questions.

Rebecca.jpgAuthor Biography

Rebecca Berto is the author or the dark contemporary/literary novella, PRECISE and the upcoming new adult contemporary romance novel, DROWNING IN YOU. She is also a freelance editor.

She writes stories that are a bit sexy, and straddle the line between Literary and Tear Your Heart Out. She gets a thrill when her readers  are emotional reading her stories, and gets even more of a kick when they tell her so. She’s strangely imaginative, spends too much time on her computer, and is certifiably crazy when she works on her fiction.

Rebecca Berto lives in Melbourne, Australia with her boyfriend and their doggy.
