Joclyn Despain has been marred by a brand on her skin. She doesn't know why the mark appeared on her neck, but she doesn't want anyone to see it, including her best friend Ryland, who knows everything else about her. The scar is the reason she hides herself behind baggy clothes, and won't let the idea of kissing Ryland enter her mind, no matter how much she wants to.
The scar is the reason she is being hunted.

If only she knew that she was.

If only she had known that the cursed stone her estranged father sent for her 16th birthday would trigger a change in her. Now, she is being stalked by a tall blonde man, and is miraculously throwing her high school bully ten feet in the air.

Joclyn attempts to find some answers and the courage to follow her heart. When Ryland finds her scar; only he knows what it means, and who will kill her because of it.

Author Interview

Hi Rebecca! Welcome to Nick's Book Blog.

Thanks for having me, I’m kind of nervous/excited to be here – let’s hope I don’t mess this up.

Could you please describe your book in a Tweet? (140 characters)

Oh dear,
you are going to make me mess up right off the bat aren’t you. Okay, let’s see “The story of
an introverted girl who faces her fears, runs for her life, falls in love, while her best friend is
tortured and killed.”

Nailed it.

What was your writing process like for Kiss of Fire?

I sat down at my computer and
barely got up for two week – literally. The story came so fast I couldn’t stop writing if I wanted
to. My laptop became my best friend.

I read from your biography that you grew up in a performing family. What was
your most memorable experience being at the theater?

Now you are really asking for
trouble. Theatre people are weird. When I was in my teens my friends and I used to hang out at
the theatre we worked at until the early hours of the morning doing all sort of things you’re not
supposed to; like Sword fighting in your under wear and ‘hunting’ someone with their hands tied
behind their backs. As for the most memorable experience, I would have to say going on stage as
Katrina Van Tassle in Sleepy Hollow with about an hour’s notice that neither the main actress or
her understudy would be there. I only got about half way memorized and had to ad lib the rest,
including the dance which I learned back stage 2 minutes before curtain.

You write scripts! How is that different from writing an actual story?

Yeah, I’ve been writing scripts for a while. I actually team write scripts, so it’s me and another gal who
stand around playing off of each other. Writing a full story has been a lot different, but I actually
like it more – like a lot. I’m able to more accurately describe the worlds and emotions my
characters are in rather than leave it up to an actor. It really makes the story more ‘mine’ and
that is a very addicting feeling.

I also read that you wrote scripts based on fairy tales. What is your favorite fairy
tale?

This is going to be very telling. I REALLY like the original Grimm’s tales – the blood,
death and mutilation, there is never a happy ending and the themes always leave you with a
weird WTH feeling. With scripts based on fairy tales they tend to be for children, so you’ve got
to leave that stuff out. I wrote a version of Sleeping Beauty once where the witch had disguised
herself as someone very close to the princess for her entire life, only to reveal herself at the
princess’ weakest and attack her. But that level of deceit was very uncomfortable to kids and it
didn’t go over very well.

Your grandmother seems like someone you really cherish and love. Tell us an
interesting story involving her.

Sure! My grandmother is a very loving a kindhearted
person. She owned a bookstore and only gave books for present. But there is one small story about her that is so out of character you can’t help but laugh at it. My grandmother was born
in the 1920’s, grew up in a suburb, loved her siblings and chased Wayne Newton and his
brother out of their kitchen with a broom because that ‘good for nothing scoundrel was trying to
serenade my sister.’ Sister ended up marrying someone else, Wayne Newton became famous and
therefore was still a ‘good for nothing scoundrel’. Go Figure.

My last question for you, if you could change one thing about your book right
now, what would it be?

Joclyn’s age. As the book opens it is her 16th birthday, while Ryland
is almost 18. In the original story they spend several years apart, Ryland controlled by his father,
Joclyn trying to save him and the story picked up again when Joclyn was 18 and Ryland 20. It
didn’t read well with the beta readers so I changed it. I never in my wildest dreams thought the
book would be received so well, or that I would ever write the second one or I would have made
them older at the beginning. Now, they are both so young that I can’t really take the story where
it was supposed to go. I’ve fixed the problem, and no one will be able to tell, but there were some
traumatizing moments there for a little bit. lol

Thanks for answering these questions for me, Rebecca!

Thanks for having me! It was a lot of fun!
