As the façade her father has built starts to crumble around her she will have to decide which means more to her; the truth or her life.
 Author Interview
Hi Emma! Welcome to Nick’s Book Blog! I’m really excited to have you here.
To start off the interview, describe your book, Owlet, in 3 words.

Dreams. Feathers. Secrets.

What was it like when you first got the news that your book would be published?

You know that moment when you see your birthday cake and it is your very favorite flavor and you are just thinking “YES!!!! Today is my special day!” That x1000!
If there was one thing you would change in your book, what would it be?

I don’t currently have anything I would truly change but I am perfectly sure that when I look back a few projects from now I will find plenty :-p

Now, from your biography, I read that you are a cover designer.  So, what is the cover designing process like?
When it comes to covers for publishers and other authors it is a lot different than the process I use for my own covers. For authors and publishers I almost always ask for a copy of the novel because the main thing I want to come across is that connection some books have with their cover where if you were to as someone to guess what the book was about in a few words, those words would not only be relevant but describe the story well. I feel like a good cover and content combo can really help bring a reader in, whereas when there is that disconnect between the cover and the novel it doesn’t have that same memorable quality where the novel and image somehow coincide in your memory. I start out with the novel; I write down or keep in mind descriptors that aren’t so much about the content but the emotions. Then talk over the author or publisher’s concept and try to find the image in my mind or a concept that really catches my interest (which isn’t all that easy because I can be very picky) and from there I go to the creating phase. Normally a lot of symbolism goes into each of my covers no matter who I am doing them for. For my own covers it is that process… only repeated 16 times because I am never satisfied and always have too much time to think it through.
Top 5 places you would like to visit

Europe (Cliffs of Dover), Japan, Egypt, China and New Zealand (I really want to try black water rafting!)

Top 3 books of 2012

Hard choice. I am SERIOUSLY wanting to read ‘What’s Left of Me’, am currently loving ‘A Temptation of Angels’ and am very excited for the release of the final novel in the ‘Beautiful Creatures’ series.

Top 3 YA crushes

I am not much of a crush kind of girl. I do really enjoy reading the male interests in the Jamie Magee Insight series, Beautiful Creatures series and to be honest, when I was ten and read In the Hand of the Goddess I could have had a crush on George ;-)
Thank you for taking your time to answer these questions, Emma!
Thank you so much for having me on your blog Nick!

Excerpt

The scene reminded her of an apple tree she remembered having seen long ago, when she was only a little girl. Something about the tree had always stayed in her thoughts, even though she hardly remembered anything else from her childhood. The fruit never seemed to become the deep, full red they were meant to be; instead, there was always a hint of green left around the stem. That tree and the fact that she was the reason her mother was gone, were her only real memories from before the age of seven. Since her father had never told her how her mother had died, passing during childbirth was the only explanation that made sense. So Iris had decided when she was eight that she was the cause for all of the horrible things that happened.

“Can you see the bird feeders?” Diana asked.

Iris looked at the branches of the trees for anything that seemed out of place. “No.”

“Neither could I before, but now I have spotted a couple. Your mom used to hang them everywhere so that she could watch the birds through this window. There is even a big birdbath hidden somewhere in those trees. Joseph probably moved it. He is the groundskeeper, and makes sure that the island stays well taken care of. Sweet old man with a golden retriever for company, you’d like him.” Diana touched the window and her eyes filled with emotions that Iris had seen only a few times before. She always thought that Diana was missing someone or that she wanted to run away but could never decide what the truth really was.

“Did you know her? You seem to know so much about the island...about everything.”

“Have you seen her room yet?” Diana said. “There might be something of hers left in there. From what I heard a lot of work was put into that room so it was left ‘as is’ by the people who were sent to clean up for our arrival. They were only allowed to dust and vacuum in order to make it safe for your lungs.”

“No. But, Diana...”

“I think you should look at her room.” Diana’s voice cracked slightly, but it was so out of character that Iris knew something was wrong. She thought Diana had been back to her old self but now she wasn’t so sure. The island may have been taking more of a toll than she thought.
