Something Wicked Comes

Hi guys!

Welcome to my stop for the Something Wicked Comes Halloween Tour hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings & Babbling About Books.

So, from where I come from, Halloween isn't celebrated, but since I moved to the States a few months ago, I'm going to be experiencing my very first Halloween! Wohooo! :) Plus, it's my birthday on the same day!

Moving on to the post itself, I have on the blog with me today Tara Fuller, author of Inbetween, for a guest post on Halloween. I really enjoyed reading it, so I hope you guys enjoy it too! Also, you guys can scroll down for a spooktastic giveaway!

Halloween Guest Post: Tara Fuller

Something Wicked This Way Comes…

My love affair with the paranormal goes all the way back to high school for me.  Maybe even a little before. Movies like The Shining, It, and Poltergeist paved the way for my love of all things horror. That probably had something to do with why Halloween was my favorite holiday growing up. Well, that and the candy of course. By the time I was in my senior year I was fascinated, but I wasn’t a true believer. I mean, it’s always easier to just not believe the things you don’t understand, right?
But one night, all of that changed. My high school boyfriend and two other friends of ours at the time suggested we do some ghost hunting one night. My Jimmy had always claimed his house was haunted. It was an old place, the kind with history. He said he heard noises at night. Not just noises, but things would happen. Lights flicking on and off. His TV turning on even after he’d unplugged it from the wall. Screams from his basement and footsteps in the kitchen. I won’t lie. Even as his stories had me shaking in my boots, I called his bluff. I went so far as to even agree to stay the night at his house with a group of friends. We camped out in the living room. Draped over recliners and sofas. My boyfriend and I found a pallet on the floor.

“Wait for it,” he’d said. “Just after midnight, you’ll hear it. Footsteps. They walk into the kitchen, open the refrigerator door, then walk back. It happens every night. I swear to God.”
We laughed. We didn’t expect for it to happen, yet we watched the clock with baited breath.
12:00AM. The green numbers below the TV glowed. I shifted in my sleeping bag and held my breath. I think we all did. The one’s that were still awake anyway.

12:01AM. A creak. My heart lurched in my chest and I balled the sleeping bag around me into my fists. I listened to a set of footsteps, slowly; make their way from the living room, just feet from my head, to the tile kitchen floor. The refrigerator door opened. I looked up and Jimmy’s eyes were wide with a big fat I told you so!

I didn’t know what to think. What to do. So, I waited. I waited, without breathing, as those eerie footsteps made their way back across the room and into…nothing. Someone jumped up and flipped the lights on. There was none there. No one but us.

Most of us bolted, but I managed to work up the courage to make several visits to Jimmy’s in the weeks after. I heard and saw things that I’m certain I’ll never be able to explain in the lifetime. Things that gave me nightmares and changed the way I believed. His dad had a night vision camera, so we went on our own missions to cemeteries, the supposedly haunted “cry baby bridge”. We were sort of addicted to finding more, even thought it terrified us that we might. But we never saw or heard anything like we had in the place where he slept every night.

Maybe that’s why I write the things I do today. Sprinkling the romance I write with the paranormal and unexplainable. Would I call myself a believer today? Yeah, I guess I would. The next time you see that movement out of the corner of your eye, hear that creak in the staircase in the darkness of the night. Remember one thing. Seeing is believing. And certain things… they just can’t be unseen. Happy Halloween. ;)
