Summary (from Goodreads)

Title : The Promise of Amazing
Author : Robin Constantine
Publication Date : December 31st 2013

Publisher : Harper Teen
Goodreads - Amazon - Barnes & Noble

Wren Caswell is average. Ranked in the middle of her class at Sacred Heart, she’s not popular, but not a social misfit. Wren is the quiet, “good” girl who's always done what she's supposed to—only now in her junior year, this passive strategy is backfiring. She wants to change, but doesn’t know how.

Grayson Barrett was the king of St. Gabe’s. Star of the lacrosse team, top of his class, on a fast track to a brilliant future—until he was expelled for being a “term paper pimp.” Now Gray is in a downward spiral and needs to change, but doesn’t know how.

One fateful night their paths cross when Wren, working at her family’s Arthurian-themed catering hall, performs the Heimlich on Gray as he chokes on a cocktail weenie, saving his life literally and figuratively. What follows is the complicated, awkward, hilarious, and tender tale of two teens shedding their pasts, figuring out who they are—and falling in love.

Personal Thoughts

The Promise of Amazing is a book that I went into lowering my expectations because so many of my close blogger friends had issues with it. Ultimately, I think that definitely helped me enjoy this much better than my Goodreads friends. It wasn't a perfect book, but it wasn't the worst book I've ever read either.

The main character, Wren, was one I liked immediately. She's the sort of girl who isn't exceptional. She was just a plain old average teenager which made her easy to connect with. Wren was also easy to sympathize with because she was the middle child and suffered from the same issues that middle children usually do when it comes to attention and parents. There were also certain parts of the book when Wren really shone as a character with her actions that made her likeable. Grayson, her love interest, was the opposite. He was outspoken, bold and cocky, everything that Wren wasn't. He does some stupid things in the book that made me question his maturity and by the end, I don't think I warmed up to him entirely. He undoubtedly had his sweet side to him, but I wanted to learn more about his character and get to know him on a deeper level than we did.

The romance, in all honesty, wasn't my favorite part of The Promise of Amazing, the reason being, the fast pace at which it developed. It never felt realistic to me, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. Plus, I never got why Grayson fell for Wren and vice versa. However, I do admit that there were some sweet moments between Wren and Grayson. What I did love in The Promise of Amazing was how involved Wren's family was in the book along with the friendship element of the book. While the primary focus might have been the romance, the author made sure to give equal importance to the family and friends dynamics as well. There was also a side story concerning Grayson and his old friends, which I didn't think added much to the story, but nevertheless eye-opening when it comes to Grayson's character. It's clear from The Promise of Amaizng that Robin Constantine is a promising and talented author and I'm looking forward to seeing what she comes up with in the future.

While not perfect on every level, The Promise of Amazing was an entertaining read that held my attention throughout with Robin Constatine's lovely writing.
