Blog Tour Stop : First Frost by Liz DeJesus

Hello everyone!
Today for my tour stop for the First Frost blog tour, I'll be sharing with you all my interview with the author.

Summary (from Goodreads)
Title : First Frost
Author : Liz DeJesus
Publisher : Self-Published
Publication Date : June 22nd 2012
Goodreads - Amazon

Fairytales aren’t real…yeah…that’s exactly what Bianca thought. She was wrong.

For generations, the Frost family has run the Museum of Magical and Rare Artifacts, handing down guardianship from mother to daughter, always keeping their secrets to “family only.”

Gathered within museum’s walls is a collection dedicated to the Grimm fairy tales and to the rare items the family has acquired: Cinderella’s glass slipper, Snow White’s poisoned apple, the evil queen’s magic mirror, Sleeping Beauty’s enchanted spinning wheel…

Seventeen-year-old Bianca Frost wants none of it, dreaming instead of a career in art or photography or…well, anything except working in the family’s museum. She knows the items in the glass display cases are fakes because, of course, magic doesn’t really exist.

She’s about to find out how wrong she is.

Author Interview

Hi Liz! Welcome to Nick’s Book Blog.

Hi Nick! Thank you so much for having me here today. So excited to talk to you about my new book First Frost

To start the interview, what made you decide to write a YA book?

I actually got the idea for First Frost while watching a commercial for a local children’s museum. I thought ‘Why don’t they have more themed museums for kids. Like a pirate museum or a fairy tale museum.’ And once the idea came to me all I could think of was that would be an awesome idea for a story. Of course, I go into writing mode very quickly and start asking myself all sorts of questions. What if all the items in the museum were really magical? Who works there? Why? And before I knew it I had a pretty good idea about who my characters were and what they had to say.

What is your writing process like?

I know a lot of writers that start out with outlines. And I envy them. I wish I were that organized and neat. I’m a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants kinda girl. I go where my characters take me. My characters are real people (they exist in my head but they feel very real to me) and sometimes I’ll be washing the dishes and I’ll hear them chattering away. Sometimes that’s how I get the best bits of dialogue when the little voices in my head are just yammering away. I’ll usually write the first draft and that’s mostly ideas or scenes that stand out in my mind. The second draft is mostly filler, making sure that things tie in to each other and make sense. Then the third draft I add descriptions, check spelling or grammatical errors and basically polish the novel so it’s ready to be seen by a beta reader or an editor.

If you could change one thing about First Frost, what would it be?

Hmmm. Maybe slow things down a bit, the novel is pretty fast paced and I would’ve liked to work on the relationships between Bianca & Terrance, and Ming & Prince Ferdinand. But that’s what the sequel is for. ;)

How much of you is in the main character?

Wow. I would say 50%. Bianca has my sense of humor and the instinct to protect family and friends. I’m very much a lioness when it comes to my loved ones and Bianca has that. The other 50% is who I think Snow White would be if she lived in the modern world.

If you weren’t a writer, what would you be?

A teacher, or a counselor. Definitely someone who works with kids.

To finish off, why do you think fans of YA should read First Frost?

I think First Frost is for anyone that enjoys reading fairy tales. It has a little bit of everything, magic, action, humor, and romance.

Thanks for taking your time to answer these questions, Liz.
